Thomas Applegate, Executive Director
Thomas is excited to be working with our team of staff, volunteers and community stakeholders for the betterment of life on the northwest side, where he is also a resident. He is committed to strong community and economic development through active engagement that fosters equal access to opportunities for all residents. Prior to NRC, he was the Executive Director of Hostelling International-Chicago where he oversaw the $3.5m hostel facility operation with 36 full time employees. Thomas started his professional life as a litigation attorney in Chicago and also owned an fine Asian antique store with his spouse Athene.

 

 

Duka Dabovic, Economic Development Coordinator & SSA Manager
Duka works with businesses and residents to develop our business districts by encouraging the growth of our neighborhood businesses and managing the delivery of services by the Albany Park & Irving Park Special Service Area.







 

Brienne Ahearn, Educaton Coordinator
Brienne works with schools in our service area and partners with Illinois State University CTEP (Chicago Teacher Education Pipeline). This partnership draws prepared, committed, and effective teachers to live and work in our community. Brienne comes to North River Commission as someone motivated by education, community, and service. She studied, worked and explored abroad in Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico and Argentina. Before moving to Chicago she earned her Masters in Comparative and International Education at Teachers College, Columbia University and worked for the International Rescue Committee. In Chicago, Brienne was hired as an English Language Training Instructor at RefugeeOne, a refugee resettlement agency located in Uptown. She built numerous community partnerships in Uptown and throughout the Northside of Chicago.

  

Alexa Schutz, Program Coordinator.

Alexa is excited to work on responsible community and economic development with North River Commission communities and stakeholders. She applies her MA in Public Administration from Illinois Institute of Technology, where she worked prior to joining NRC. Alexa values volunteering and is a committee member in the Wicker Park Advisory Council and serves as a board member for the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network (YNPN) Chicago chapter. Alexa grew up in Northwest Indiana, where she always felt connected to the vibrant communities of Chicago. Her love for exploring Chicago’s many neighborhoods has led inextricably to a career in community development.
